Over the course of his employment at Hogwarts, Dobby became close friends with Aberforth Dumbledore, and spent much time at Aberforth's home in Hogsmeade, getting to and from the school through a secret tunnel. They also presumably moved trunks and baggage to and from rooms, cleaned dormitories, and presumably other areas of the castle as well. Sir Nicholas explained to them that the house-elves worked in hiding, and it was considered the mark of a good house-elf that they did all the work but their existence was not even noticed. Despite the seemingly horrid lifestyle that house-elves endured, house-elves seemed to actually enjoy being enslaved.

We may joke about Dobby’s endless admiration of Harry, but when it came down to it, Dobby was the most loyal friend you could ask for. His love for Harry never wavered and this was most evident when he came to rescue Harry and his friends from Malfoy Manor. Dobby must have been so terrified to go back to the place and the people that had terrorised him for so many years. While we all know the tragic ending to this chapter, we want to remember the moment that Dobby stood up to his former masters and proved once and for all that he really was a free elf.

Kreacher tried to stop the members of the Order of the Phoenix from throwing away the many dark magic items with which 12 Grimmauld Place was filled, even going so far as to rescue some of them, which might be very important later (OP4, OP6, OP9, OP23). Elves appear to have been bred or enchanted to view their servitude as a noble vocation rather than enslavement. He, with the help of Dobby, rallies the house elves to fight in the Battle of Hogwarts. Winky's fear of heights had led her to cover her eyes the entire time, leading her to miss Crouch, who was starting to resist the Imperius Curse, stealing a wand in the open. Following a riot instigated by Death Eaters at the camp grounds of the Quidditch Cup, Crouch Jnr was able to fight the Imperius curse and gain some control over himself. Enraged by the Death Eaters disregard for finding Voldemort, Crouch Jnr attempted to attack them but Winky thwarted this by magically binding them together, taking him into the woods by force where the Death Eaters were not present with Crouch struggling all the way. Crouch resorted to firing the Dark Mark (the sign of Lord Voldemort) into the sky during the attack with the wand he had taken in order to strike fear into the disloyal Death Eaters.
